Pages, Microsoft Word, and OpenOffice.org: do you really need all of those features?

I'm lucky enough to be able to play with those three applications on my Mac. Pages and OpenOffice are both native application for Mac while Microsoft Word is a Windows application that I have to run under Parallels Desktop. It's been two years since the first time I used them and I think it's the time to say that cross platform compatibility is my biggest issue. It doesn't matter what application you use to create the document, if you want your receivers to get the same feels, looks, and even effects you have to make sure that they use the same application. Or, the other way around.

The hardest part of all is to make sure that numbering format, indentation, and graph and data format is all same within those three applications. Somehow, there will always be formatting loss if you export them i.e. Pages and OpenOffice) to doc format (I'm afraid that most of my clients and customers are using Word, so let's assume that doc is a standard format on this matter).

Personally I prefer Pages for its user friendly interface and easy usage that let you focus on the work to complete. But there is no use of a complete work when at the end you realize that your client can't get the report as you want it to be. Again, that's the main problem. And you absolutely can't tell your clients that they use a "different" application. That won't work.

In an effort to overcome this problem, I always (at least for the last one year) use minimum formatting option. A plain text with standard format is always welcome in every application in every platform. That means standard fonts, standard numbering (though it still has big issue on Word and OpenOffice), justified alignment, and manual heading. For graph and data insertion, I always use picture instead of graph or data itself. In this case, those abundant features are useless. And it's not just in Pages. The abundant features lie within OpenOffice is also useless.

Having this applied for almost a year, I'm beginning to think what use of those other highly-sophisticated-features lies within each application. How many of you really use other than simple standard feature to complete your work? Why can't they focus on compatibility and inter-operability to mitigate this effect?

I believe that this is going to be a major issue for the following years, especially when online collaboration replaces the way we work. Compatibility is my highest consideration point. Google, which I consider as competitor in office productivity application with their Google Docs, has an advantages on this matter. However, Indonesia won't be ready for full online collaboration. Offline is still an option for Indonesia user. So I think Google should also consider this compatibility point, especially during conversion to another format.

A beta version of Chrome for Mac

As I’m sure you know, we generally don’t comment about timelines for releasing specific features or products. But we’ve been quoted a few times saying Chrome for mac should be out by the end of the year
Excerpt from Techcrunch.

I've been playing with Chrome several days and impressed with the speed and its clean look. However, the "top site" (what do you call top site of Safari in Chrome?) is not updating its thumbnail like the way of Safari does. And it's quite iritating my eyes.

Cost efficiency by using a Mac instead of Vista PC

How long do I have to wait for my PC (using Vista OS) during startup and shutdown? Compare to my MacBook, It's two minutes delay in average. It's time that I need to wait before I can use the PC during startup plus time that I need to wait to complete shutdown.

There you go. Two minutes to waste, because of that bloated-Vista.

This is my estimation of annual cost for the delay. 2 minutes on daily basis and 300 office and home working days on annual basis, in which 70% of the above hours is charged on rate of $125 per hour and 30% is charged on rate of $325 per hour. This shall equal to $1850 per annum.

Think you can't ditch Vista? Think again!

Google CEO Eric Schmidt resigns from Apple board

With Chrome vs Safari? With Android's phone vs iPhone? With the upcoming Chrome OS vs Mac OS? I think resigns is the only options for both Apple and Google to be more competitive.

We, the user, at least, have options to ease our lives.

Preview: Print multi-pages per sheet

Most of my work's deliverables must be sent to my colleagues by email. Nevertheless, occasionally I have to print them out and make sure that every little thing is in place. Typo errors are something that I really dislike, especially when the report must go to board.

In this case, I usually print them out in layout mode, print multi pages into single sheet. It reduces paper usage and easier to handle. But, it's been awhile since I did not know how to do that simple thing using Preview. I stuck with one page per sheet option, which leads me to complain on how Preview handle this matter. Even worse, I did not try to, at least googling, find solution on this matter.

Actually, the feature is already there, inside the Preview. All you have to do is select Layout option from the drop-down menu just below the Orientation. There you can select whatever number of page per sheet as you like.

Telkomsel's iPhone 3G is coming

It's coming. First launching will be in South Pavilion Pacific Place on 20 March 2009 at 2000 to midnight. Pre-order users shall have first priority to get the iPhone 3G.

Nevertheless, the pricing scheme has put me in little shock. The unlock prepaid is expensive, Rp. 9.6 million for 8GB and Rp. 11.2 million for 16GB. That would be around $827 and $965 for 8GB and 16GB respectively at current exchange rate. Both unlock prepaid scheme includes 500MB free data (worth of Rp. 2.5 million). However, I'm not sure whether this 500MB free data is monthly free or not.

Postpaid scheme offers much more realistic pricing-scheme. Handset price plus monthly fee include 500MB free data, free sms, free talk. The amount of free sms and free talk depends on the scheme, from 3 available options. But still, I think the price scheme is too expensive.

Nevertheless, this won't stop Apple fan and iPhone freak from getting in the line to get this sweet gadget.
